Portrait of Baba Gaia by Khatleen Minerve

I was born in Mauritius in 1993, and grew up between Reunion Island and it's sister island.

All-rounder, curious and passionate about nature, it is in the colorful and tropical landscapes of my two islands that I draw my artist name and inspiration from.

Finding in the imagination of Douanier Rousseau an echo of my practice and my colorful universe, I makes tropical nature the central theme of my art. Continuously trying out different media and techniques - from markers to paint; from walls to digital - I portray Mother Nature with a harmonious and confident line. Like an ode to nature and cultural diversity that cradled my childhood, my exuberant work demonstrate an innate sense of detail and spontaneity that reflects my personality.

It was in 2015 that I got noticed by the self-taught artist Gaël Froget and, at just 22 years old, I made my first solo exhibition at the Hennessy Park Hotel. Collective exhibitions 13 (Imaaya, 2015), Borderline (The Third Dot, 2018) and Nu Le Morne (Lakaz d'Art, 2020) will follow. Recently, I distinguished myself during a live painting session for the Dreamers event (La Isla Social Club, 2019) and by the creation of a mural at the entrance of the Mahogany Shopping Promenade (Beau Plan, 2021).

If the theme of mu art - an imaginary nature - remains my signature, my practice continues to evolve. From fabrics to abstract art, I never stops trying new projects to enrich my work and my artistic vision.
